Teaching Philosophy Statement

As a teacher it is my goal to help my students explore their full potential by nurturing their musical, artistic and academic pursuits through a
goal-oriented curriculum and clear instruction that encourages cognitive thinking.

Within my studio teaching the course of study consists of progressive technical exercises, etudes and repertoire that is organized the by areas in need of exploration by the student. The criteria are based upon the student’s development of musicianship, the role of the repertoire within music history and the saxophone and the professional goals of the student. Subject areas of repertoire include the standard repertoire, contemporary works, jazz, and chamber music. The constructs of the fundamental elements of playing the saxophone are explored at each lesson to better understand how the manner in which they use their body, e.g. posture, air support, tongue position, embouchure, and thoughts while playing, affect their progress and performance on and off stage.

I bring to my teaching an open discourse of my experiences, challenges, and love for the music and this career path.
